Diwali at the Museum

Share in the colour and vibrancy of Diwali during a full evening of celebrations at Manchester Museum.

Diwali is a festival of new beginnings and the triumph of good over evil, light over darkness and knowledge over ignorance, celebrated by millions of Hindus, Sikhs and Jains across the world.

Our celebrations are a chance for people of all ages and cultures to immerse themselves in the spirit of the festival.

It all starts at 4.30pm with fun, family activities across the Museum before the party starts as the sun begins to set and you’ll have a chance to enjoy dance performances and music. Last year, our Main Hall was transformed into a bouncing dance-floor so you won’t want to miss out!

In addition to all the activities, you’ll be able to enjoy sweets from Lily’s Deli in the Welcome Area, while, mocktails from Renu Bhardwaj’s new book Celebrate Diwali served from the coffee bar. Our Museum Cafe will be open late until 7pm, and will include some additional Diwali specials on the menu.

From 6pm DJ Dan Singh will be playing music bringing the Diwali atmosphere to the museum and at 6.30pm there will be a Welcome with Dhol drumming.

*It’s not necessary to book a ticket and we will accept walk-ups depending on capacity. However, booking a ticket is the best way to guarantee your place as we anticipate high demand for the event.

You can help us care for our collections and bring joy and inspiration to people in Manchester and beyond

As one of the UK’s largest university museums, we care for over 4.5 million objects, with an internationally-important collection spanning from Archaeology to Zoology, and nearly everything in between. We work with communities, support university students and schools in Manchester and beyond and we are a free, inclusive museum for all. But we need your help. Every object we care for, exhibition, school visit and community event comes at a cost, and you can help make the museum as ambitious and impactful as possible.
