A Sense of Flora
Installation by Daksha Patel
Visit Manchester Museum’s Top Floor to find artist Daksha Patel’s installation ‘A Sense of Flora’, drawing on the museum’s botanical collections.
This show explores the links between experiences and memories of diverse natural environments and plants, identity and the crucial role of plant biodiversity in food security. Daksha Patel’s new series of works will be on show, produced in response to research into Indigenous crops such as ensete, and into the food plants of the future.
The centrepiece of the show is a large installation of prints, made by asylum seekers and refugees during workshops at the charity Rainbow Haven. These sessions explored memories and thoughts about flora from participants countries of origin. Rainbow Haven is a place of welcome, support, and opportunity for displaced people in Manchester and the surrounding areas. It provides community drop-in sessions and activities for refugees, asylum seekers and vulnerable migrants.
A Sense of Flora is supported by Arts Council England. The installation at Manchester Museum is part of the event programme for the Wild exhibition, exploring our relationship with the natural world and unique approaches to environmental recovery.
