African Art and Creativity
Create artwork inspired by African mask making, beadwork and pottery as part of our Black History Month celebrations.
You’ll have an opportunity to take a close-up view of African objects from the Museum’s anthropology collection, while looking at art within its wider cultural and historical context.
There will then be a chance to use this as inspiration for the creation of your own artwork, with support from British/Nigerian sculptor and public artist resident in Manchester, Joseph Ayavoro.
The event will be hosted by the Museum’s Curator of Living Cultures, Dr Njabulo Chipangura, in collaboration with The Beginning Group, which aims to reduce poverty by working with communities to unleash new skills and knowledge, providing opportunities to reduce barriers into the workplace.
It’s part of our wider work around the African collections. We are reassessing provenance research, shaping object biographies, exploring restitution and repatriation, and creating new knowledge, working with the African diaspora in Manchester and beyond to understand how these collections can best inspire future generations.
