Chinese Living Library
Drop in and read a ‘book’ by talking to people, rather than flicking through pages.
A Chinese living library is a concept that brings human experiences to life through storytelling. In this innovative activity, individuals become ‘books’, sharing their personal stories, struggles, triumphs, and perspectives with others who ‘read’ them.
Just like browsing through a book collection, participants can read the human ‘books’. By engaging in one-on-one conversations with these human books, readers have the opportunity to challenge stereotypes, build empathy and foster a deeper understanding of the complexities of human life.
For the first time we are inviting Jasmine Gardner, who is a Chinese adoptee and also an artist. Her topic will be, My University Tutor Told Me That I Don’t Have the Soul of an Artist. She will talk about her experience as a younger East and South East Asian (ESEA) student in a predominantly white art institute and how the power imbalances between herself and her tutor directed her current art practice.
She will also talk about the power/lack of language when it comes to communicating feelings of otherness and micro-aggressive comments from people with higher authority. A brushstroke papercutting workshop by Jasmine Gardner will be held on the same day.
