Herbal Remedies: A focus on Sri Lanka's Traditional Medical Knowledge

Part of the Collection Bites series of lunchtime talks

Herbal remedies and medicinal plant knowledge have slowly been phased out of our households in favour of prescription and over-the-counter medication to treat minor ailments from the sore throat to stomach aches. However, in the biodiversity hotspot that is Sri Lanka, its rich history of Traditional medicine has been preserved as an important part of Sri Lankan culture.

This Collection Bites will focus on Sri Lanka to explore how Colonial extraction of knowledge, and Industrialisation have led to Indigenous / Traditional Medical Knowledges being overlooked by the world at large. The talk will consider the importance of embracing Indigenous / Traditional Knowledges in fostering healthier relationships with nature. You will also get a closer, behind-the-scenes look at some of the specimens housed in the Museum’s Herbarium.

Collection Bites is an adult programme, however the content is suitable for all ages. The talks are approx. 30 minutes. They take place on the first Wednesday of each month in Manchester Museum’s Research Studio on the Second Floor (accessible by stairs or lift).

Please note: Tickets are very limited. If you are no longer able to attend, please cancel your booking through Eventbrite, or email museum@manchester.ac.uk to let us know, so we can offer your place to someone else.
