Collection Bites: Reclaiming Narratives

A focus on African traditional musical instruments and dances

This talk will look at the interpretation, presentation and significance of musical instruments from Africa in their originating communities.

We’ll consider the connection of these objects with spirituality, rituals and traditional celebrations, including rain petitioning/making ceremonies. We will also highlight the importance of provenance research and the narratives of the originating communities in telling stories about objects from African perspectives.

Collection Bites is an adult programme, however the content is suitable for all ages. The talks are approx. 30 minutes. They take place on the first Wednesday of each month in Manchester Museum’s Research Studio on the Second Floor (accessible by stairs or lift).

Please note: Tickets are very limited. If you are no longer able to attend, please cancel your booking through Eventbrite, or email museum@manchester.ac.uk to let us know, so we can offer your place to someone else.
