Culture Monday: musical edition
An exciting day of culture at Manchester Museum and the Martin Harris Centre
Manchester Museum opens its doors for a special tour aimed at people aged 50 and over in this age friendly Culture Monday.
As the Museum is not open to the public on Mondays, this is a unique opportunity to enjoy our galleries at a quiet time and to get closer to our collections, guided by members of the Visitor Team and our wonderful volunteers.
After the tour we are invited to keep enjoying culture with a lunchtime concert at the neighbouring Martin Harris Centre for Music at Drama by the wonderful Michael Kahan Kapelye University of Manchester’s klezmer ensemble.
The fourteenth generation of the university’s resident klezmer ensemble returns to perform a vibrant programme of arrangements of music originating in Eastern European Yiddish cultures. The traditional instrumental music of the Jews of Eastern Europe, referred to as ‘klezmer,’ can be traced to the Middle Ages. It was introduced to the U.S. by immigrants in the late 1800s to early 1900s and is widely popular today.
The primary instruments are clarinets, fiddles, various brass instruments and the tsimbl, a variant of the hammered dulcimer.
