Culture Monday: musical edition
An exciting day of culture at Manchester Museum and the Martin Harris Centre
Manchester Museum opens its doors for a special tour aimed at people aged 50 and over in this age friendly Culture Monday.
As the Museum is not open to the public on Mondays, this is a unique opportunity to enjoy our galleries at a quiet time and to get closer to our collections, guided by members of the Visitor Team and our wonderful volunteers.
After the tour we are invited to keep enjoying culture with a lunchtime concert with our friends at the Martin Harris Centre for Music and Drama by the vibrant University of Manchester’s Jazz Ensemble.
Led by Alexander Gagatsis, the music department’s jazz ensemble was established in October 2019 and, alongside the klezmer, gamelan, Nigerian gospel, medieval, and contemporary music groups, it is one of the department’s many assessed ensembles that complement the larger orchestras operating under the umbrella of Manchester University Music Society (MUMS).
The band made its public debut at Manchester’s iconic venue, Band on the Wall, in December 2019. The musicians are second-year music students, most of whom play a range of instruments. Since its inception, the focus of the group has been on the interaction between jazz and music from Latin America of mainly African ancestry, what is broadly understood as Afro-Latin Jazz.
This concert features arrangements of popular songs from the Great American songbook, funk, soul, blues, as well as some original compositions by students.
