Repair as Resistance
Exploring the repair of our stuff, ourselves and our communities
Repair as Resistance is led by Breaks & Joins, a project exploring the desire to repair as a form of resistance to many of the challenges of the contemporary world.
Come and listen, engage, watch, participate, and think about how we might all become repairers, and how we face the fact that not everything can or should be mended.
- Hear tales of repair from the Royal Exchange Theatre Elders Company and guests.
- Watch Chuck Blue Lowry’s film: Can Everything be mended?
- Bring your broken items to our repair café.
- Consider Sustainability, Climate Justice, Activism and Wellbeing with a team of experts.
- Hear poems from the acclaimed poet Arji Manuelpillai.
All activities are drop in, except for the following workshops, which can be booked via the link below.
2-3.30pm, Raj Bhari: Community Conversations
As part of Repair as Resistance Raj will be offering a session for arts, community and cultural workers in managing the breaks and joins in our communities and encouraging autonomy and activism. The methodology draws on active listening, separating facts and feelings, and unlocking our imaginations and hopes. Raj encourages storytelling and reflection between participants – a co-learning experience. Raj Bhari is a Peacebuilder, and a core member of the Breaks & Joins team.
6.15-7.15pm, Rachel Ho: Scarred pots (only suitable for ages 18 and over)
As part of Repair as Resistance Ceramicist Rachel Ho will lead an immersive, contemplative workshop using her scarred pots inspiration and making our own scarred pots in clay. Her workshop holds space for stories of hope, healing and repair. Her scarred pots are inspired by Kintsugi, an ancient Japanese method of mending broken pottery with gold. Rachel is a ceramicist based in Macclesfield, and originally from Northern Ireland.
