Time Odyssey

An exciting free learning adventure for KS2 pupils at Manchester Museum.

Time Odyssey is a major new national learning programme created by Art Explora and the British Museum, in collaboration with digital developer Arcade XR.

It takes children on a quest through their local museum – both physically and virtually – using a fun, interactive gamified learning experience designed for Key Stage 2 pupils.

During a full day at Manchester Museum, students will meet characters lost in time: Revna – the Viking of the Sea, Cheng – a Trainee Scribe from Ancient China, Felix – future leader from Roman Britain, and Hori – a tomb painter from Ancient Egypt. Together they work in teams to tackle five quests and open the time portal to get their chosen character back home.

Time Odyssey is designed to be played on tablets (loaned to the class for the day) while being physically present in the museum. The class teacher will be responsible for the class on the day, with introductions, timetables, resources and technical support provided by the Manchester Museum team. We recommend 4-5 accompanying adults per class (perhaps more if pupils require reading support), which may include parent helpers and TAs. Time will be available during your day to eat lunch. Pre- and post-visit resources are also provided.

Students will be encouraged to:

  • Understand life in different historical periods.
  • Work in teams to observe closely, analyse, and communicate information on collections in the Museum.
  • Enhance their communication skills.
  • Be inspired to visit and explore museums.

We hope that teachers will:

  • Build their confidence visiting museums with pupils.
  • Build their understanding of the potential for Manchester Museum as a learning venue.
  • Return to visit Manchester Museum for free supported visits in the future, for example using our Big Question resources.

Funding

The Time Odyssey experience is completely free of charge. Schools participating in the Time Odyssey experience can also apply for travel funding up to a maximum of £500 per coach.
