Picnic area

Ground floor, next to the Main Hall

View the museum map

Our picnic area is on the ground floor next to the Main Hall includes work surfaces, microwave stations to heat up your lunch or dinner, washing up and hand washing facilities, bins – and lots of picnic benches. It was been beautifully decorated to complement the Museum Café.

There’s no need to book – you are welcome to use the picnic area during the museum’s public opening hours.

Did you know the museum is home to around two and a half million bugs? We don’t want any more! Please enjoy food and drink in the Picnic Area, Museum Café and Main Hall, but not in our galleries and exhibitions. Crumbs and spillages can attract creepy crawlies that ruin our objects.  You’ll find lots of bins around the museum.

You can help us care for our collections and bring joy and inspiration to people in Manchester and beyond

As one of the UK’s largest university museums, we care for over 4.5 million objects, with an internationally-important collection spanning from Archaeology to Zoology, and nearly everything in between. We work with communities, support university students and schools in Manchester and beyond and we are a free, inclusive museum for all. But we need your help. Every object we care for, exhibition, school visit and community event comes at a cost, and you can help make the museum as ambitious and impactful as possible.
