Pride Trail

Head into the Museum, pick up a trail sheet at the welcome desk and start exploring.

Celebrate Manchester Pride with us!

Every August the City of Manchester bursts with Pride, in celebration of our LGBTQ+ communities. Rainbow flags adorn even more windows and shop fronts than usual, and the city is buzzing with activity!
Keep an eye out on your visit around the museum for mini Pride flags placed among the collections. Each point on the trail highlights LGBTQ+ history or speaks to current day LGBTQ+ culture and movements.
Hand in your completed sheet at our welcome desk to enter our Pride prize draw!

This competition will run until Sunday 8 September which is the final day of Manchester Alternative Pride in Platt Fields Park.

Can you name this bird?

These birds are known for sometimes coupling in same-sex partnerships. They carefully incubate eggs and then raise their chicks together. The parents have similar responsibilities regardless of whether they are male or female. A famous children’s book based on a real story was written about two male birds of this species raising a chick together.

Where can you find this display?

This display is all about queer spaces of belonging. We can belong to many communities at the same time, and each of them make us who we are. This collection is about celebrating underrepresented voices and showcasing intersectional histories. The mix of these events and stories enrich community history.

What type of animal is this?

This animal is considered ‘King of the Jungle’. He is much more visible than his female counterpart. Museums generally have a lot more male specimens than female. Our taxidermy collections are made up of about 80% male and 20% female specimens, which reflects how collectors felt about gender.

What is this colourful reptile?

This animal lives in the museum but its species comes from the northern regions of Madagascar. It can change colour and brightness, camouflaging itself in its surroundings or standing out with rainbow colours. Some people think of it as a queer icon. It might be hiding!

What types of objects are in this case?

This gallery uses comics art to tell stories of belonging. Edher Numbi explores homosexuality and black masculinity, subverting stereotypes about black African identities. He asks us to question why we associate these objects with war and violence. Come and read his story.

What is this creature's name?

The naming of this prehistoric icon relates to the gender of the person who first discovered it rather than its biology. A famous creature of the same species at the Chicago Field Museum called SUE took the internet by storm when announcing they use gender neutral pronouns!
